AKWETEY JOHN ORRACA-TETTEH

Through intimations of painting, performance and 3D technology, Akwetey’s work concerns the mediation of ancestral and digital histories in the age of technological advancement and world decay. In concert with his studio practice, Akwetey is best known for his collaborative work with peers Alex Da Corte, Avery Singer and Camille Henrot, notably as the voice of “Grosse Fatigue”, the Smithsonian commissioned video essay and winner of the 55th Venice Biennale’s Silver Lion Award. Akwetey has since featured in exhibitions at The New Museum, The Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian-Hirshhorn Museum, The Palais De Tokyo and Photo London at Somerset House.
Akwetey’s work has been featured in Artforum, BOMB, Frieze, Rhizome, OkayAfrica, Widewalls, and The New Yorker. He is the recipient of the Mass Moca Artist-In-Residence, The Planetary Self Fellowship, and was a 2019 Visiting Artist at the NYU Steinhardt School of Arts. Orraca-Tetteh has published essays for The Brooklyn Rail and literary arts journal InDigest magazine, and has guest lectured at the Christie’s Graduate School of Education in New York. He is based in Mexico City, Los Angeles and Accra(Ghana) and holds a BFA from Amherst College.
